STEPHEN DUPONT

made his photojournalistic debut covering the withdrawal of Vietnamese troops from Cambodia for ‘PLAYBOY’ magazine – it opened up a road of mostly personal journey’s that took him throughout Asia, Indochina and Australia. He moved to London in ’92 and started to focus his work on the world’s trouble spots earning an international reputation in the field. He traveled and photographed crises in Angola, Bosnia, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, India, Afghanistan and Zaire and found himself drawn to stories often not in the media spotlight but just as important internationally.

By ’94 he had been selected as one of the ten most-promising young documentary photographers internationally and was invited to the first ‘World Press Photo Master Class’ in Holland. In ’97 he based himself in Paris and joined ‘Contact Press Images’.

In 2000 he was a founding member of the first festival of photojournalism in Australia – “REPORTAGE”. His photographs are held in collections in America and Australia and he regularly does assignments for THE NEW YORKER, NEWSWEEK, GEO, and VANITY FAIR, STERN, THE SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINE, TIME and others.

Steve started shooting video while on assignments and his documentary debut sparked immediate controversy worldwide. His footage of US soldiers committing atrocities sparked international headlines and much praise. It also achieved something that all photojournalists aspire to – it ‘made a difference’ and US policy was changed. He is following it up with a documentary about drug addiction in Kabul.

He has published two books ‘STEAM – India’s Last Steam Trains’ and ‘FIGHT – A Global Retrospective on Traditional Wrestling’ and a book on Afghanistan in pre-production.

He is a recipient of the prestigious ROBERT CAPA GOLD MEDAL, WORLD PRESS PHOTO and PICTURES OF THE YEAR INTERNATIONAL. He lives in Sydney and when not covering trouble spots documents the environment and ecology for GREENPEACE.
